Lead with the nose

Some wines whisper.
These announce themselves.

Aromatic wines are a style apart. Before the first sip there is a rush of orange blossom, pear, ginger and freeze-dried strawberry, the kind of perfume you notice across the room. These are wines led by the nose as much as the palate.

Chardonnay 2022

Under 6% of the region is planted to Chardonnay. Mount Michael chose it in 1994 and still makes the wine from those 30-year-old vines.

Pinot Noir Rose 2024

Rose from 100% Pinot Noir, a grape critics revere, made with a precise four-hour cold soak for colour and lift without grip.

Pinot Gris 2024

Born of the same family as Pinot Noir and commanding the highest grape price per tonne in New Zealand. In Central Otago it grows dry, structured and seriously aromatic.

What's inside

Three bottles.
One fragrant bouquet.

A three-bottle release chosen from Mount Michael's estate in Central Otago, spanning a cellar-aged 2022 Chardonnay and two vibrant 2024s, built around aroma, freshness and a long, perfumed finish.

I Mount Michael Chardonnay 2022

Chardonnay 2022 · Lowburn, Central Otago

A cellar-aged Chardonnay

From a low-yielding single vineyard, and one of the few Central Otago estates growing Chardonnay at all, this 2022 has had time in bottle to settle into something richer. Pear, quince, brioche and almond, with fine acidity, a creamy texture and gentle oak spice through a long, elegant finish.

Youthful, fresh and enticing.Cameron Douglas MS · 92 points
II Mount Michael Pinot Noir Rose 2024

Pinot Noir Rose 2024 · Gibbston, Central Otago

A dry, perfumed Rose

Freeze-dried strawberry, ruby grapefruit and orange blossom lift from the glass, dry and fragrant, with a soft vanilla note and a long, mineral finish.

Charming wine with good sweet-sour tension.Bob Campbell MW · 92 points, Silver Ribbon
III Mount Michael Pinot Gris 2024

Pinot Gris 2024 · Queensberry, Central Otago

A textural Pinot Gris

Fresh pear, stone fruit and a twist of ginger lead into a dry, structured palate, driven by bright acidity and a lingering finish. Aromatic and precise, never soft.

The most food-friendly bottle in the box, equally at home with Thai spice or a soft cheese.Andrew Keenleyside · Winemaker

Schist soils, hot days,
cold nights.

Family-owned since 1994

45th parallel south,
at the entrance to the Kawarau Gorge.

Mount Michael shares the same latitude as Burgundy and looks out over some of Central Otago's finest wine country. Our vineyards sit on schist soils, in a place of hot days and cold nights.

That diurnal shift is what gives our aromatic wines their lift, their perfume and their bright, lingering finish. Independently family-owned, we craft award-winning wines shaped by the land.

Frequently asked questions

The Aromatics Trio is a three-bottle wine subscription from Mount Michael Wines in Central Otago, New Zealand. Each delivery includes a Chardonnay, a dry Pinot Noir Rose and a Pinot Gris, chosen for their aromatic, expressive style. It costs $86.40 NZD on subscription and arrives every two months.

Each trio includes Mount Michael Chardonnay 2022, Pinot Noir Rose 2024 and Pinot Gris 2024, all grown in Central Otago. The Chardonnay is a cellar-aged release. The line-up stays the same between vintages, updating only as each wine's new vintage is released, so the aromatic style holds steady.

Chardonnay is rare in Central Otago, making up under 6% of the region's plantings in a place dominated by Pinot Noir. Mount Michael planted it in 1994, giving half its first vineyard to Chardonnay. Those 30-year-old vines, on schist soils at the foot of the Pisa Range, produce the 2022 in this trio.

Most rose is made from volume grapes like Grenache or Cinsault. This is made from 100% Central Otago Pinot Noir, one of the world's most revered grapes, grown on schist at 45 degrees south. A precise four-hour cold soak and a cool, aromatic-yeast ferment draw out colour and fragrance while keeping it dry, light and free of grip.

Pinot Gris shares its DNA with Pinot Noir, the same grape with different coloured skins, so it thrives on the same Central Otago schist and extreme diurnal swings. The result is dry, structured and intensely aromatic, never soft or flabby. It is the region's second most planted variety at 11%, and Central Otago Pinot Gris earns among the highest grape prices in New Zealand.

The Aromatics Trio is $86.40 NZD per delivery on subscription, a 10% saving on the $96 one-off price. You are billed every two months, only when we ship. Complimentary shipping is included on every trio across New Zealand. There is no joining fee and no lock-in contract.

Aromatic wines lead with perfume. Their scent, such as orange blossom, pear, ginger and strawberry, is immediate and vivid before you taste. The Aromatics Trio is built around this style, with a Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir Rose and a Pinot Gris chosen for fragrance and freshness.
